Edgewood is a neighborhood school with approximately 330 students. We are a 2 section school that serves grades 4K-5th grade. We're proud of our diversity--we have 17 languages and cultures represented in our student body. We value home-school connections, and seek to partner with families.
Academically, we know that elementary learning serves as the foundation for all future learning. In all subject areas, instruction involves both partner or group and independent work. We create opportunities for students to talk and discuss challenging questions with one another, to analyze their work, and apply feedback. Teachers work to understand each child's unique learning profile, and to tailor experiences to ensure that each child is supported and challenged. Our instruction is based on the Wisconsin State Standards. Reading instruction aligns with the most current understandings of science of reading. We believe all students can be strong readers and mathematicians. Math instruction focuses both on understanding and on fluency. Science and social studies are interwoven with English Language Arts to allow students ample opportunity to develop foundational skills and knowledge. All students in grades 4K-5th grade receive art, music, and physical education instruction weekly, and guidance lessons every other week. Our 4K program is full-day, with a half day option for those that want it.
We work to ensure that every child succeeds. To do this, we closely and collaboratively monitor student progress and provide targeted supports when needed. One way of supporting academic needs is through Tiger Time, which occurs four times a week. During this 30 minute block, students receive bonus instruction to either help them master skills/concepts that were difficult for them, or enrichment instruction that pushes them to understand a concept or process more deeply. We're lucky to have the support of an English Learner Teacher, two Reading Specialists/Differentiated Supports Teachers, an Instructional Coach, and a full time School Psychologist. Our School Counselor also provides individual and small group support to support students' engagement in school. In 2025, the State of Wisconsin recognized us as a school with High Progress and High Impact.
Our commitment to teaching the whole child is evident through our focus on character education. We're proud to be a National School of Character (certified first in 2019, and again in 2024). Character Education is woven into the fabric of our school life. We focus on character in morning meetings, school-wide assemblies, literature, and even how we approach math problems! We believe that strong character is a central piece of the success of our students, both at Edgewood and in life.
